How do I know if my business idea is any good?
The short answer
A good idea solves a real problem for a specific group of people who'd actually pay for the solution. You find out if that's true by describing your idea to real people and watching how they react, not by guessing or by asking friends who don't want to hurt your feelings.
Start with the problem, not the idea
Most ideas that struggle aren't badly built, they're solving a problem nobody urgently has. Before judging your idea, get specific about the problem: who has it, how often, and what they currently do about it (even if that's "nothing").
Questions worth answering honestly
You don't need a market report. You need honest answers to a few plain questions.
- Who exactly is this for? ("everyone" is not an answer)
- What do they do about this problem today, without your product?
- Would they pay to solve it, or is it just mildly annoying?
- Can you describe it in one sentence someone would understand instantly?
Test it before you build it
Talk to a handful of people who actually have the problem. Describe what you're thinking of building and watch their reaction, not their politeness. Genuine interest looks like questions, wanting to know when it's ready, or asking to pay. Politeness looks like "that's a cool idea!" and nothing else.
A good idea doesn't need to be original. Plenty of good businesses do something that already exists, just better, faster or for a more specific group of people.
Questions people ask
- Does my idea need to be original?
- No. Many successful businesses take something that already works and do it better for a specific group of people. Originality helps less than solving a real problem well.
- What if people say they like it but don't want to pay?
- That's useful information. It usually means the problem isn't painful enough yet, or you're talking to the wrong people. Keep adjusting who you ask and how you describe it.
