What is vibe coding?

The short answer

Vibe coding means describing what you want in plain English and letting an AI tool write the actual code for you. You steer by describing the result you want, checking what comes back and asking for changes, rather than writing every line yourself.

Where the name comes from

"Vibe coding" is a casual name for a real shift in how software gets built. Instead of learning a programming language and typing out instructions line by line, you describe what you want in everyday language: "make a page where people can sign up and see their orders" and an AI tool turns that into working code.

You're still in charge of the decisions. You just don't have to be the one typing the syntax.

What it actually looks like

You type a description of a screen, feature or fix. The tool generates the code, shows you a preview, and you look at it the way a customer would: does it do what I asked, does it look right, does anything feel off.

If something's wrong, you don't dig into the code yourself. You describe the problem again, more precisely, and ask for a fix. It's closer to briefing someone than to programming.

  • You describe outcomes, not syntax
  • The tool writes and updates the actual code
  • You review by looking and clicking, not by reading code
  • Good, specific descriptions get better results than vague ones

What it doesn't remove

Vibe coding removes the need to know a programming language. It doesn't remove the need to know what you're building and why. You still have to think clearly about who your product is for and what it should actually do.

The clearer your thinking, the better your instructions, and the better the results.

For example: What a prompt looks like

"Build a simple page where someone enters their email and gets added to a waitlist. Show a thank-you message after they sign up, and show me a list of everyone who's joined." That's specific enough for a building tool to act on.
